What do we look for in an Outdoor Pursuits Instructor?
To be an outdoor pursuits instructor with Peak Pursuits we require someone with lots of enthusiasm for the outdoors and a great sense of humour and fun. You must have the relevant qualifications from National Governing Bodies. These include the following;
BELA - Basic Expedition Leaders Award
MIAS – Mountain Bike Instructors Award Scheme
SPA – Single Pitch Supervisors Award
BCU – British Canoe Union Coaching Awards
ML – Mountain Leader Award
First Aid qualifications are also useful.
Experience of working with young people is an advantage particularly those with challenging backgrounds and behaviour. Being able to communicate effectively with a variety of people is a necessary skill within this field.
If you are a young person yourself and are interested in working within the outdoors industry, a good place to start is by taking part in The Duke of Edinburgh's Award. This demonstrates a willingness to try new challenges and also indicates commitment. For more information, go to our Duke of Edinburgh's Award section.
Other organisations like the Scouts have a series of awards which are also useful. Being involved with organisations such as these will give you a good overall experience of the outdoors.
Travel experience and experience of other cultures is of interest to us as it demonstrates a spirit of adventure and an open mind.
