DofE Open Gold Expedition October 2010
Autumn: Sat 23rd – Sun 29th October 2010 in the Peak District
Cost £295 per person. First 3 days in bunkhouse accommodation (half board) preparing for your expedition and 4 day expedition in the Peak District (expedition food and kit hire not included).
Programme
DAY 1
Arrival at 4pm. You will meet the other members of your team, and participate in Team Building activities and form your walking teams.
DAYS 2-3
The next 2 days will comprise of route planning, kit & food checks, with the programme focusing on campcraft and catering skills, and a review of your menus and a safety briefing. For those on a Practice Expedition, training will be delivered in campcraft, cooking, first aid, safety and weather and research into your Purpose and preparation for presentation. Revision on the other topics is included for those on a Qualifying Expedition.
You will then undertake a short walk with your instructor, honing emergency procedures and navigational skills. There will be a brief opportunity to head into the local village to pick up any last minute supplies. There will then be time for you to pack your equipment and prepare for your expedition. You will also meet up with your assessor and participate in a pre-expedition check before having the rest of the evening off as free time to relax before your expedition.
DAYS 4 - 7
4 Day Expedition through the beautiful Peak District. Complete your expedition, and participate in a review and de-brief with your supervisor or assessor. Depart approx 4pm
Before the Expedition
Once we have received your Registration Form, we will send you a comprehensive Joining Pack to help you prepare for your expedition. This includes location details, local transport, kit lists, and ideas for your purpose.
Equipment
Personal and group equipment can be hired from Peak Pursuits for a small hire fee, including:
- Rucksack - Sleeping Bag & Liner - Roll Mat - Tent - Stove, pans & fuel - First Aid Kit
- Maps - Compass
If providing your own maps, Peak District expeditions take place on OL1 map, and Lake District expeditions on Maps OL5 and OL7.
Prerequisites
You must be:
- Aged between 16 and 25
- Already enrolled onto the DofE Gold Award
- Have completed your initial training and have your Record Book signed up by your
DofE Leader
- Able to undertake a 4-day expedition in a Wild Country area of the UK
You will need to arrange your own transport to and from the Expedition Area and you will need to bring your own food (for the expedition) and all other items of personal kit. You must also bring your Record Book with you to show evidence as to what you have achieved so far, and for it to be signed off during your expedition.
