Background
Following recent visits to the island of Abaco in the Bahamas , members of Oakhanger Project are working with the residents of Crown Haven, Abaco to develop a residential Activity and Adventure program for the islanders, which can be shared with overseas visitors. A site has been identified offering camping and self-catering facilities and work was begun in November 2004 to develop the area.
Recent hurricanes, some of the worst in living memory in these parts, have damaged the island's infrastructure considerably. This is being repaired using local and international funds with the aim of re-establishing the self-sufficiency of the population. In addition to practical assistance to rebuild their homes, the people of Abaco need help to re-establish their self-confidence and uncertainties created by the fear that similar events could reoccur.
For some years, members of Oakhanger Project, have used Crown Haven as a base for camping and canoeing activities, at the same time developing friendships with the villagers, mainly through the local church. We aim to develop a permanent centre where individuals and groups from the Bahamas and from the UK and other countries can meet and use outdoor activities and adventure programs as a basis for personal, social and spiritual development.
How you can help
We are recruiting a team of volunteers to visit the Bahamas in November 2005 and in 2006. We are looking for enthusiastic volunteers who are willing to work with other team members and the residents of Crown Haven to establish the programme. A willingness to learn new skills as well as sharing the skills you have is essential.
Although final details are yet to be fixed, it is expected that the trip will be of two weeks duration. The visit will include:
- Work on the Residential Site. Clearing the campsite and self-catering block. Cleaning, painting and decorating, site clearance and minor building work.
- Activity program with young people. Building an Activity/Adventure Course. Running an activity programme for the young people of Crown Haven and Fox Town . Training residents in basic Outdoor skills.
- Supporting work with St. Anne's Church, Abaco, and other churches in the diocese.
There will be time allocated during the trip for the Team to spend time out camping on the deserted islands between Abaco and Grand Bahama . A chance to relax, snorkel, fish, swim and barbeque. You will have the opportunity to gain BCU kayak certificates if required.
