Music is a great means of breaking down barriers. Everyone has favourite songs or pieces of music and this forms the starting point for the engagement of the young participant. Melodies and rhythms can stimulate a variety of emotions and convey a range of experiences.
How often do you hear a song on the radio that reminds you of a particular time in your life? Songs have a way of becoming our own and provide a soundtrack to life's experiences.
Music and songs are ideal vehicles for getting young people to open up and bring issues to the fore. The enjoyment of creating a personal musical piece enables the participants to discuss issues in a less formal environment. Once this level of trust is established they are often more open to guidance.
Incorporated within the sessions, a degree of discipline, co-operation, perseverance and expression result in an end product that was perhaps initially considered by the participants as beyond their capabilities.
The creative process engages, stimulates and questions the participants. This leads to increased communication, self confidence, raised awareness and self esteem both personally and collectively.
Our music workshops are designed to give young people a basic knowledge and insight into music and to engage young people through this medium.
Music Performance Workshops
Playing a musical instrument involves the thrill of live interaction. Whether between an individual musician and tutor in the practice studio, the performer and their audience, or amongst different instruments in a band, there is no greater form of direct expression and communication.
Participants will be given the opportunity to learn an instrument of their choice including guitars, keyboards, drums and even vocal coaching. This gives young people the chance to work together, build friendships and even form bands. Drum and Percussion Workshops
Drumming forms an integral part of many global cultures from the Japanese ceremonial “taiko”, to the hypnotic “djembe” of Africa and the uplifting samba rhythms of South America.
The call and response of drumming is the basis of musical communication and the sessions provide a great platform for social interaction and expression. By learning simple rhythms and rhythmically interacting with other drummers through our Latin and African drumming workshops, personal barriers are lowered allowing the participants to develop individually and as a group.
Experimentation and improvisation with different time signatures through ensemble percussion is fun and enjoyable and it encourages young people's co-ordination, creativity and self expression coupled with a sense of well-being and bonding.
