What is involved?
The Expedition section involves planning, training for and completing an unaccompanied, self-reliant expedition with an agreed aim.
All participants must do at least one Practice Expedition and a Qualifying Expedition (the one that is assessed) in order to complete the section.
Expeditions must be completed by the participants’ own physical efforts with minimal external intervention and without motorised assistance. The route should be a continuous journey.
All Qualifying Expeditions are assessed against a list of 20 conditions.
What do Peak Pursuits provide?
Peak Pursuits offer a complete Expedition package that is tailored to meet the needs of your group. We have a dedicated Duke of Edinburgh's Award team to ensure the best possible delivery. We can also kit out your group with all the required expedition and safety equipment.
Training – A 2-day intensive training which covers all aspects of your expedition, including equipment, campcraft, catering, navigation, first aid, safety and route planning. For schools and groups, this will usually be delivered at your location. An alternative programme consisting of 10 weekly training sessions can also be provided.
Practice Expedition – Fully-supervised Practice Expedition over 2 days (3 for Gold) in an area providing similar conditions to your Qualifying Expedition. The first day will be spent practising Navigation skills whilst out “in the field” and also supplementing the training delivered in the classroom. Subsequent days will be under remote supervision to allow you to develop your self-reliance, leadership and teamwork skills.
Qualifying Expedition – Fully-supervised Qualifying Expeditions, assessed by our team of accredited assessors. Qualifying Expeditions meet all the 20 conditions laid down in the DofE Handbook.
