The Roaches - This dramatic gritstone escarpment juts up from the rolling countryside and is the jewel in the crown of The Staffordshire Moorlands. Nearly a thousand acres of moor and rock, formerly belonging to the Swythamley Estate were purchased by The Peak District National Park in 1980, signifying the South West corner of the Peak District. Formed over millions of years by ice ages and the elements, the rocks now present a natural obstacle course for scrambling and climbing. The Roaches are split into an upper tier and lower tier and the area is a magnet for climbers of all abilities looking to challenge themselves on the classic gritstone routes.
