This unprecedented heatwave the UK has been experiencing has been welcomed by most people, particularly those who love spending time outdoors. With glorious sunshine every day for the last few weeks, most of us have enjoyed being able to take part in our favourite adventure activities in Derbyshire without carrying an umbrella or wellies around with us.

However, with temperatures exceeding 30C in many parts of the country, it is essential to stay cool in the intense sunshine. Here are some tips on how to keep safe while still enjoying your time outdoors.

 

– Dress smart

If you are planning to spend a long day outside, it is important to dress smart according to the weather forecast. Light-coloured, lightweight and loose clothing is the best choice, as it doesn’t cling to the skin and allows it to breathe.

Black, tight and metallic shades are known to raise the body temperature, so avoid these where possible, and choose athletic gear made from breathable fabric over cotton as they allow some airflow through the fabric.

 

– Seek shade

Us Brits are drawn to the sunshine because it’s so rare we see it. However, just because it is sunny, this doesn’t mean we have to stay in the sun all day long.

Remember to seek shade when you feel yourself getting too hot, and avoid being in the sunshine during the hottest hours of the day (11:00 – 15:00). If you have to stay outside, bring an umbrella with you or wear a wide-brimmed hat to protect your head from the sunshine.

 

– Stay hydrated

It is essential to stay hydrated when being physical outdoors in the summer, so make sure you drink plenty. Medical Daily advises to drink a glass of water before going outside to ensure you don’t lose excess water during the first 45 minutes of any strenuous activity. It is also wise to have a refillable bottle you can keep drinking from so you don’t dehydrate as you sweat.

Having a cooling spray and a personal mister, or wetting a towel and applying it to your body are also good ways to reduce your body temperature and protect yourself from sunstroke during this heatwave.
